Slot car racing has a very dedicated following. The hobby, or sport as it is to some, nearly died out in the 1970′s but has been kept alive by racers and track owners like Frank Sarkela, 61, who owns and operates Slot Car Raceway in Rohnert Park.
His shop is the home of an annual race, the Pacific Coast Scale Championships, which is one of the major slot car races in the nation. They also play host to regional and national racing event.
Saturday, June 22 is the unofficial anniversary for Slot Car Raceway and they are celebrating their 20 years in the business with special races on both Saturday and Sunday. Frank’s goal for the weekend event is to get as many new and old racers from the area to stop by for the fun.
The shop will be open on Saturday, from 12 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. with a variety of races to take place.
Along with hosting regular races, Frank’s shop has a bevy of race car parts and also hosts birthday parties where kids can race cars around the tracks.
Slot Car Raceway is located at 305 Southwest Boulevard. You can visit them online at SCRhobbies.com or call 795-4156 for more information.
